Bags per pallet, weight and yield
QUIKRETE’s product page for Concrete Mix No. 1101 lists the bag sizes it comes in with their pallet counts. The weight in the table is the printed bag weight times the number of bags, so it excludes the pallet and wrapping. The yield per bag comes from QUIKRETE’s datasheet for the same product.
| Bag size | Bags per pallet | Product weight per pallet | Yield per bag (ft³) | Mixed concrete per pallet |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 80 lb | 42 | 3,360 lb | 0.6 | 25.2 ft³ (0.933 yd³) |
| 60 lb | 56 | 3,360 lb | 0.45 | 25.2 ft³ (0.933 yd³) |
| 40 lb | 80 | 3,200 lb | 0.3 | 24.0 ft³ (0.889 yd³) |
How much does a pallet of concrete weigh?
Counting only the bags, a pallet of 80 lb bags holds 42 × 80 = 3,360 lb of mix, and a pallet of 60 lb bags holds 56 × 60 = 3,360 lb. A pallet of 40 lb bags holds 80 × 40 = 3,200 lb. The pallet and shrink wrap add to that. These are label weights, so a given pallet may differ slightly. Check the weight with the store before loading a vehicle or trailer, and ask how the bags will be moved.
How many pallets does your project need?
Work out the number of bags first, using the mixed yield printed on your product and a chosen allowance, then divide by the bags per pallet and round up. The table uses 80 lb bags at 0.60 ft³ with a chosen 10% allowance and 42 bags per pallet. Pallets are the unit a store may deliver or load, so the last pallet is usually only partly needed.
| Project | Planning volume | Bags needed | Pallets | Spare bags on the last pallet |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 × 10 ft slab, 4 in | 36.7 ft³ | 62 | 2 | 22 |
| 12 × 16 ft pad, 4 in | 70.4 ft³ | 118 | 3 | 8 |
| 20 × 20 ft slab, 4 in | 146.7 ft³ | 245 | 6 | 7 |
Pallets compared with a cubic yard
One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so at these yields a cubic yard takes 45 bags of 80 lb (1.07 pallets), 60 bags of 60 lb (1.07 pallets) or 90 bags of 40 lb (1.13 pallets). A pallet therefore holds a little less than a cubic yard of mixed concrete: 25.2 ft³ for the 80 lb and 60 lb pallets and 24.0 ft³ for the 40 lb pallet. For larger pours, ready-mix is delivered by the truckload instead, which is covered in the article on truck capacity.
50 lb bags and other brands
QUIKRETE’s page lists no pallet count for its 50 lb bag, and this article does not give one. Other manufacturers and stores stack pallets differently, and a store may sell a part pallet. Use the count printed on the product listing or ask the store, and enter your own bag count into the bag calculator for any product.
Questions to ask the store
Before you order or collect:
- How many bags are on a pallet of this exact product and bag size?
- Can you sell part of a pallet, and is there a delivery or pallet charge?
- What does a full pallet weigh, and how will it be loaded?
- Is the mixed yield printed on the bag the one I should use?
